artist statement
In my practice I explore the elements that gives a place its unique quality. Questioning what is it that creates the feel of a place both in terms of our emotional reaction and the physical characteristics that exist within it, and how do these depend upon each other? What makes one place differ from another?
Working with textures, natural pigments and earth colours and using a variety of tools, found materials and techniques I create artworks that relate to a sense of Place in terms of its essence and structure. Walking the landscape, allowing images and patterns to make themselves known has become a central part of my practice.
Recent work focusses on the concept of Fault Lines both in the very real geological sense but also in a geopolitical and social sense of looking at the divisions that exist within what we consider to be a Place. In doing so I also raise the possibility of hope and healing through a process akin to the Japanese art of Kintsugi which takes broken artifacts and reconstructs them using gold to create objects that are even more beautiful than the original.
It is this sense of hope that drives my art.
