Jane Adams

artist statement
These are a series of paintings inspired by the witness we bear to the destruction of our environment. Ghostly figures inhabit benches which commemorate lives lived and vistas once enjoyed, but which now are at risk from human activity. They are paintings which ask what it means to celebrate being alive in a world which that, by our very existence, we are helping to bring to an end. And as for the benches? They are where mankind, by means of commemorative plaques, writes down its hopes and dreams.
The paintings form a story board whereby the sea is gradually embroiled in plastic.
They are painted in acrylic and oil on Gesso board using photographs and dioramas to create the scene.
