artist statement
Intangibles of intense mood, energy and atmosphere. Influenced by a background in exhibition design, from observation, memory and sensuality of a selected place, working with acrylic, mixed media and print, each piece of work is a journey, developing slowly over time. Collecting knowledge of a particular site by visiting often throughout the seasons, sketching alongside photographs, and working back in my studio I take elements of the landscape, exploring the literal quality, and by a process of deconstructing and reassembling I retain the elements of structure and atmosphere through line and colour in a semi abstracted way without losing all recognition of place.
The path with no end

artist bio
Mary’s work comes from her perception of a place within the Cornish landscape, and feels she is influenced by her background in exhibition design. She enjoys returning to the same site throughout the seasons, building up a series of work. She sketches, and takes photographs but prefers to work from her memory back in her studio overlooking the Argal Reservoir, and by using mixed media she takes the elements of the environment, exploring the literal quality, and by a process of deconstruction and reassembling she retains the elements of structure in an abstracted way without losing all recognition. She feels it is important that the viewer interprets the work through their own perception and she enjoys hearing the reactions to the work.
Having worked in tourism and the marine trade she returned to education as a mature student and obtained a degree in Fine Art from the Falmouth School of Art.
Influenced by the artists Diebenkorn, Hitchens, Lanyon and the group of Fauve Painters, Mary enjoys the journey through mark making which she feels gives her work the initial energy, and following with mixed media, specifically acrylic, ink and collage, allowing her work to develop gradually over time and often working through the seasons.
She exhibits her work at The Stableyard Gallery on the Trelowarren Estate, The Cowhouse Gallery in Perranuthnoe and the Penwith Gallery in St Ives. She has opened her studio for the Cornwall Open Studios over several years and exhibits at various premises within the Falmouth and Helford area with the ‘Landscape Take Five’ and the ‘Helford Artists’ Groups.
