Lizbeth Marie

I use light as a material. I create transparent works that hold changing light as an Impressionistic reflection of ‘fleeting phenomenons’ of the natural world: cloud formations, shadow, colour shifts, distance, tree movement and water  but also as an experimental process to harness and explore the potential of light itself.

I use transparent materials to create slides and blocks with resin, perspex, glass varnish photography and paint.

I come from a drawing and painting background and have turned to alternative materials to explore new surfaces’ potential of playing with light.

Each piece can be viewed for it’s versatility, as any natural scene that changes with surrounding moving light, so too does the artwork.

I use both natural and man made light.

Whilst creating, I can aim and steer for thoughts of visual composition, however I delight at the defiance of the materials and often witness a mysterious transmutation of matter, which may vastly  veer from my original hope of composition. I find pleasure in experiment- combining materials, observing matter and their properties, and so I embrace the flaws, mistakes, mess and imperfections. Matter does it’s own thing. I see these as objectively beautiful occurrences from which to learn and steer again.

In resin I feel I have not entirely created, but instead facilitated a process to witness a mystery of matter, which do allude to nature. Finally when cured, I observe their amber-like preservation.

Each piece can be viewed as precious and jewel-like, and some, I have contained in treasure-light boxes.

Contrasting weather  and ‘cusp of change’ is the focus and metaphor of Lizbeth Marie’s artwork. One precious, colourful  moment is held gently for a second then fleetingly becomes another.

She makes blocks and slides  from  layers of transparent material that appear whole and complete for one moment but can change with the surrounding light and changing weather.  Lizbeth Marie studied Fine Art (BA Hons Painting) at Chelsea College of Art and Design and  lives in Stockport, Greater Manchester.
