The one thing I know when I start a painting is that I don’t know where it will end. The painting leads me to the unexpected. The colours and textures come and go, it’s an emotional response that’s both sensual and challenging. I work fast, it’s physical, painting on the floor, I become part of the evolving landscape pushing, shoving and scraping my way into the memories of a place I love.
She gives me ginger flowers and I sip Ceylon tea, sitting in her landscape built from the pink earth that nourishes her plants and the jungle that we call home. It’s the intoxicating and deadly beauty of this much loved landscape that I find totally seductive. As the light changes the trees become sinuous and sinister like the snakes that dwell in the undergrowth the leaves become blood red, orange and deep purple. The heat of the day disappears and the fruit bats take to the sky.
Clashing colour is at the core of my painting to explore this ever changing landscape; unnerving and sensual . This where I am now.
